mike: welcome back to "upfront." he's called it a "david and goliath" fight. delavan businessman paul nehlen, a republican, is challenging first district congressman -- and house speaker -- paul ryan, in the august primary.
a new poll underscores just how big of a challenge it is. the remington research group poll shows ryan with a 64 point lead. but did nehlen get a boost from former alaska governor sarah palin? and some prominent conservative
commentators? we're asking paul nehlen, who is at our madison affiliate, wkow tv. thank you for being with us today. let me begin by asking you about the poll, which means you have a
pretty big deal to climate. what is your reaction to the survey? paul nehlen: four weeks ago, i had no name recognition, and in four weeks, i went to 4%. week two, i was not at 4%. as people realize they have a
choice now to put someone in office who is to represent them, as opposed to what speaker ryan has been doing in represent a special interests down in d.c. mike: you are not discouraged? mr nehlen: i'm thrilled. in four weeks, i went to 15%,
and we have roughly 15 weeks ago. imagine where we will be at the end of this? mike: you said congress and ryan -- congressman ryan has betrayed us all. what do you mean? mr. nehlen: you look at the
trend pacific partnership, that trade program or initiative will export jobs overseas, it will import foreign workers to replace us in our own jobs here at home. worse than that, it undermines u.s. sovereignty. why would we sign on something
that gives the u.s. one vote, gives vietnam one vote, gives peru one volt -- one vote, gives australia one vote. why would we sign onto that when we have the best, strongest manufacturing and business already here -- here in
wisconsin, as well. i have a factor in beaver dam. i started out as a maintenance mechanic at 18 years old, i ran that business and businesses around the country. i am an engineer and inventor. i have u.s. patents and foreign patents.
i was in tribe of the middle east and africa for a fortune 500. i have run businesses in mexico, canada, china. i know about business and trade. i have made payrolls. paul ryan has driven the wien ermobile.
for him to suggest he has the solution for small businesses, as he wrote in an op-ed for the "milwaukee journal sentinel,", that's offensive to small business owners. for a guy who has only h a job as a career politician to
suggest he knows that a small -- to run small businesses, paul ryan has been the champion of president obama's three biggest second-half initiatives. his second term initiatives. comprehensive immigration reform, the transpacific ardor ship, and criminal --
partnership, and criminal justice reform, or jailbreak. paul ryan is not aligned with conservative principles certainly. he is not aligned with securing the border. we have a heroin crisis right now, with cheap mexican heroin
that is killing americans and reckon -- in record numbers. paul ryan had 18 years to secure the border, and he has failed. mike: let me ask you about the fact that he has not yet endorsed donald trump. you said you were offended by that.
why should he, if he disagrees and principles on certain conservative articles -- for intervals, why should he immediately endorse amitabh? -- donald trump? mr. nehlen: he is the head of the convention, he is going to preside over that convention,
and he is supposed to listen to the voters. it's just another example of paul ryan not listening to the voters. i know why he won't. even though we are paying a salary, 83% of his campaign
financing came from outside of our district. the vast majority came from inside the d.c. beltway in the form of large campaign donations. the same people that want this borderless society, that want to
interchange humans with widgets in her job, that is who paul ryan is voting on the behalf of. mike: sarah palin says she supports her candidacy, do you expect to get help from these individuals between now and election day? specifically, will sarah palin
